Preparing to breastfeed your baby can make such a difference to how those early days and weeks go. Learning to breastfeed is a skill, as with any new skill, it can take time and practice. Learning the basics during your pregnancy can be so beneficial to enable you to feel as prepared as can be for those first moments; the early days; or for any challenges you may face on your ongoing feeding journey. An antenatal session with me can perfectly complement any antenatal courses you may be taking. It allows you the time to really explore any questions or concerns you may have about your upcoming feeding journey and to build on any knowledge you already have.
What does an antenatal breastfeeding consultation include?
Book for my one of my tailored antenatal consultations to help you learn all you need to know about preparing to feed your baby. You tell me what your needs are, including what you already know and if there is anything specific you would like more detailed support with then I can tailor your consultation to meet your needs.
I can help with a range of support including:
- The value of breastmilk and breastfeeding
- How to get off to the best start
- Principles for how to position baby at the breast so that they can attach comfortably for you and them
- Hand expressing and colostrum antenatally
- Responsive feeding and building the foundations for a loving and responsive relationship
- Common challenges and how to avoid or manage these
- Where and how to seek help and support once baby arrives
- Debrief on previous feeding experience combined with guidance for feeling more prepared this time
I can offer individual antenatal appointments for you and your partner, either face to face or via zoom. This can be especially beneficial if you have specific concerns, for example a specific medical or physical difficulty that you are concerned may impact on your ability to breastfeed. It may also be beneficial if you have had a previous difficult feeding journey that you could benefit from exploring or a debrief about; if this is the case, booking one of my bundle packages can be especially beneficial so you can have my support both before and after your baby’s arrival.
Alternatively, if you have a group of friends and would like to learn together, I can offer a group session via zoom or at one of you homes (min 3 couples, max 5 couples). This can be a fun and engaging way to learn together as well as being more cost effective for you all.
The ideal time for you to be looking to book your antenatal session would be between 28-36 weeks gestation, this allows you some time to absorb all the new information and feel prepared if baby should come earlier than expected. Do still get in touch if you are beyond 36 weeks though, we can see what availability I may have to suit you.
All antenatal face to face consultations receive one of my colostrum collection packs to help you practice hand expressing and collecting any colostrum in your final weeks of pregnancy.
Please note, home visits are only available within a 15 mile radius of Sandhurst, Berkshire. I can travel further afield with added mileage (50p per mile) beyond 15 miles, so please email/message and we can discuss.
